Make a Difference Day! October 24, 2011

The 4th Saturday in October every year is Make a Difference Day – the largest national day of helping others where millions of Americans rally into a single day of action to help change our world.

One of the projects that Seattle Works volunteers worked at was captured on twitter:

This project was with YouthCare, an organization that serves homeless and under-served youth ages 12-24 with a continuum of care that strives to engage youth through outreach services, stabilize them by helping to connect them to housing and other resources, and to prepare them through education and employment training.

Volunteers helped with a number of tasks that included: cleaning, organizing, restocking, sorting, laundry, picking up trash and yard work.

Thank you Michael for capturing the project this weekend!

AmeriCorps team goes to Georgia! October 20, 2011

Last week Ellen, Page and I jetted off to Georgia for our HandsOn Corps AmeriCorps National Direct member conference! While we hoped for sunny southern skies we were met with some decidedly Seattle-esque weather. Luckily Hands On Network had plenty of activities planned for us.

Perhaps the most valuable of our training sessions was the Leadership Compass activity and discussion designed to help members identify their leadership style. By participating, we developed a deeper understanding of how our leadership behavior works (or doesn’t) when faced with certain challenges and other approaches to problem solving and communication. I personally felt challenged at first by the requirement to label myself but eventually saw the benefits especially when asked to approach conflict in the style I least identified with. Page, Ellen and I hope to keep this learning experience in mind while in the work place since we all identified with different points on the compass!

The other aspect of the conference we thoroughly enjoyed was the opportunity to get to know each other much better. We spent our evenings discussing the day’s contents as well as our personal histories and it was nice to have the time and space to converse on a variety of topics. HandsOn Network also scheduled a few enjoyable social activities like a bonfire complete with s’mores!

This is how connections are made October 12, 2011

Seattle Works is many things to many people! We strive to connect people every day – be it to volunteer opportunities, their community, cool events, each other, etc.  and today WE DECLARE VICTORY.

We left out names for privacy reasons, but we are so touched by the sentiment that we had to share. We received a generous donation with the following note attached:

“This gift is made in the name of the bride and groom.  Seattle Works is how we met and became friends, and now we’re so happy to be celebrating your marriage. Congratulations!”
