Last Friday, while the rest of the staff was storming through final prep for Swank, I was in Everett facilitating The Bridge at the Boeing Company. It was a jam-packed day of nonprofit/public board training. This group of Boeing employees are part of a two-year professional development program that Boeing offers called Leadership. Development. Excellence.
The day started out with a guest Bridge trainer, our very own Katie Tiehen led the Nonprofit Leadership section with grace and style, participants were very responsive with her delivery of the material. Next we had Sol Villarreal from the Seattle Mayor’s Office to go over Public Boards and Commissions. They got a run down of the different types of government boards they could participate in and how to get connected. Before lunch, Ivan Barron took the participants through a Fundraising Case Study while giving them the basic tools needed to successfully ask for money. After lunch, Nathan Hartman went over financial responsibilities and how to read financial statements. This marked Nathan’s first time teaching the materials and he was fantastic! We wrapped up with Mike Quinn talking about Boeing in the Nonprofit World. This section is particularly interesting, it provides the participants with cultural insights into how they might be perceived in the nonprofit community and vice-versa.
They’re lively folks with some great ideas, passion, and excitement. One thing that impressed me the most: when asked how many of them currently volunteer in their communities; every single person raised their hands high and proud. It was beautiful! Some of them have even served or are currently serving on boards and want to develop their leadership skills to be more effective.
This group was very active, participating right away in discussions and activities. I have no doubt they all will make excellent board members if they so choose to pursue service.
