After coming onto the Seattle Works staff in early September, this month marks the six month anniversary (confetti, please!) that Ellen, Jenna, and I  have been working at Seattle Works. Our work on the HOL, Hot Projects & Team Works, and The Bridge programs, respectively, is made possible through AmeriCorps. There are about 85,000 opportunities provided for volunteers to engage in AmeriCorps each year and we are part of the State and National program and make up part of the team that serves more than 2,900 nonprofit groups nationwide.

To celebrate AmeriCorps Week (10th-18th) we’ve been attending several events around town, but we also wanted to let the SW community know more about what a week of service looks like for the three of us. Here’s what the “A-Team,” as Tara calls us, is up to this week:

Jenna:

“I’m busy kicking off a new round of Team Works by training new captains and getting everything in our new admin system as well as prepping for the Kick Off party which will involve team trivia.”

 Ellen:

I’ve been getting ready for the upcoming HOL training that starts next week (confirming trainers, working on curriculum, communicating with participants, managing scholarship applications).I’ve also been receiving applications for projects to be offered next time, as well as checking in with current participants and partners and collecting feedback about their experiences so far.”

Page:

“I’ve been following up with a new group of recent Bridge graduates after our two recent Bridge trainings, providing them with resources for getting connected to a nonprofit board or public commission.  I’m also currently in the process of updating and strengthening the Bridge curriculum with the help of our outstanding volunteer faculty!”

As our term of service comes to a close in early August, we’ll be taking all the knowledge and skills that we’ve gained this year and doing our best to prepare the next group of AmeriCorps volunteers that will be joining the Seattle Works team and who will carry on the programs that we’ve come to know so well.
